IE New York College and GWFLP debate on the role of Women Leaders in Finance
The event "Just and Green Transition: Development Finance and Women Leaders Accelerating Sustainable Finance" took place on September 23, in the sideline of the UN General Assembly and the Summit of the Future.
New York, 23 September 2024 — IE New York College, in partnership with the Global Women in Finance Leaders Platform (GWFLP) and supported by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, the Government of Brazil, and Blend Group, co-hosted a side event at the United Nations General Assembly to examine the critical role of women leaders in finance.
The session convened a distinguished assembly of high-profile dignitaries and experts, including Brazil's First Lady Rosângela Lula da Silva, three Brazilian ministers, the heads of UNCDF, UNDP and UN-Habitat, along with the presidents of CAF and Banco do Brasil. The discussions focused on the challenges and opportunities in achieving equitable financing for a just green energy transition, with an emphasis on the transformative impact of women leadership in shaping a sustainable future.
During the opening, Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP, highlighted: "A reform of the global financial architecture remains an overarching priority to address rising debt, economic inequality, and ultimately help break the cycle of polycrisis."
Making the case for a multi-stakeholder and inclusive approach, Marina da Silva, Minister of Environment of Brazil, added: "It is easier to carry out processes when they are inclusive, where we can share the authorship of what we do, and the recognition of the results achieved."
Finally, Jacqueline Leblanc, Provost of IE New York College, underscored the pivotal role of academic institutions in driving positive change and cultivating future leaders. "IE New York College was founded to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," she noted. "We fulfill this mission by preparing our graduates to make a meaningful impact and by convening critical discussions, such as today’s event alongside the UN General Assembly, in pursuit of the common good."
